Herbal extract powder shown to promote body fat reduction – study

An herbal powder from the extracts of cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica Beauvois), satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Markovich), and evodia (Evodia officinalis Dode) can significantly reduce body fat, according to a study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

The study was a collaboration between researchers from Inje University and YuYu Pharma.

  • The herbal powder, identified in the study as YY-312, had exhibited anti-obesity properties in a previous research that used animal models. In this study, researchers looked at how effective and safe was YY-312 in clinical settings.
  • The researchers designed a 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial to test their hypothesis. The trail involved overweight Korean adults aged 19 to 60 years with body mass indices (BMI) ranging from 25–29.9 kg/m2. They were then given a daily dose of YY-312 (2,400 mg, with 1,800 mg of extracts and 600 mg of cyclodextrin as a carrier).
  • At the end of the study, the efficacy of YY-312 was measured primarily using reductions in body fat mass (BFM) and body fat percentage. In addition, the team also measured reductions in body weight and waist circumference.
  • The team found reductions in BFM and body fat percentage in those who took YY-312 after the end of the trial. These were significantly greater than those in the placebo group (BFM = 1.6 kg vs. 0.1 kg; P = 0.023 and BF% 1.5% vs. -0.2%; P = 0.018).
  • Similar trends were seen in body weight (2.7 kg vs. 1.0 kg; P = 0.014) and waist circumference (2.2 cm vs. 0.8 cm; P = 0.049), with no adverse events recorded during the trials.

The researchers concluded that YY-312 exhibited a significant reduction in body fat while being safe and well-tolerated.
