A subtropical plant found to have extraordinary anti-diabetes effects


A study by researchers from the Federal University of Amapa in Brazil revealed that the subtropical plant Calophyllum brasiliense, also called Santa Maria, has potential use as a natural remedy against diabetes. This finding, which was published in The Brazilian Journal of Pharmacognosy, was based on the results of an in vivo experiment conducted in diabetic rats.

  • Diabetes, which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, is a condition characterized by high blood sugar and cholesterol levels. When left untreated, this metabolic disorder can inflict damage on the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart.
  • More people are turning to medicinal plants as alternative remedies for various health problems due to many factors.
  • Santa Maria, a plant native to Latin America, is used as a traditional remedy for bronchitis, liver disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, pain, inflammation, high blood pressure, rheumatism, and diabetes. However, further studies are needed to fully understand its therapeutic potential.
  • In this study, the researchers determined the anti-diabetic effect of hydroethanolic and granulated extracts of Santa Maria on rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes.
  • The treatment period lasted for 30 days, with body weight, water intake, food intake, and urine volume being observed daily. Additionally, the researchers measured glucose levels every five days and the total protein, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea, creatinine, transaminase glutamic oxaloacetic, and glutamic pyruvic transaminase levels on the last day.

Results of the study showed that rats treated with Santa Maria extracts experienced significant improvements in diabetes, as exhibited by reductions in different diabetes-associated parameters.
