Aloe vera reduces your risk of diabetes-induced nephropathy

Researchers from KIET School of Pharmacy and Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in India have found that aloe vera can protect against diabetes-induced nephropathy. In the study, they found that aloe vera reduced lipid alteration, decreasing oxidative stress in the kidneys, and providing kidney protection.

• Earlier research shows that 300 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of aloe vera extract has kidney-protective effect in experimental diabetic nephropathy. However, its mechanism is not fully understood.
• For the study, the researchers induced diabetes in rats by giving them streptozotocin.
• Diabetes caused renal oxidative stress and altered the lipid profile of rats, which eventually lead to nephropathy in eight weeks.
• However, the treatment with 300 mg/kg per day of aloe vera was effective against the diabetes-induced nephropathy and renal oxidative stress.
• Moreover, aloe vera treatment was found to be more effective than lisinopril, a drug used to prevent kidney problems in people with diabetes.
• The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements.
