Green tea can be used to treat acute uncomplicated cystitis in women

A study reports that green tea can be used to treat acute uncomplicated cystitis in women. The study, which was published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, evaluated the efficacy of green tea as adjunctive therapy to standard antimicrobial treatment in women with acute uncomplicated cystitis.

  • In various in vitro studies, catechins in green tea have been shown to have antimicrobial effects against E. coli bacteria.
  • E. coli causes an infection of the bladder, the most common cause of acute cystitis.
  • Researchers from Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran carried out a blinded randomized trial in 70 women with acute cystitis.
  • They gave the participants either four 500-milligrams (mg) capsules of green tea or starch as placebo every day for three days together with standard antimicrobial treatment.
  • The researchers monitored the symptoms of acute uncomplicated cystitis.
  • They also conducted urinalysis.
  • The results showed that those who received green tea capsules exhibited a significant reduction in the prevalence of cystitis symptoms, except for hematuria.
  • Women in the green tea group also exhibited a dramatic improvement in the urinalysis results after three days of treatment.

In conclusion, these findings suggest that green tea is an effective adjunctive therapy for the treatment of acute uncomplicated cystitis in women.
