PILL HOARDERS: Maryland officials buy $1.2M worth of abortion pills prior to impending nationwide ban

Officials in Maryland have purchased abortion pills worth $1.2 million – sufficient for two and a half years – in preparation for an impending nationwide ban on them.

Breitbart reported that the Old Line State made the purchase using funds from the state Board of Public Works. It joined other Democrat-led states in stocking up the abortifacients as the entire nation waits for a decision from a federal appeals court regarding the availability of the drug mifepristone.

Gov. Wes Moore announced that the Maryland Department of Health (MDH), in cooperation with the University of Maryland Medical Center, would collaborate to obtain abortion pills in case they are taken off the market.

“We made that decision based on both how we do stockpiles in general, and also [the] expiration dates of the medications,” said Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman, MDH deputy secretary for public health services. “We believe that will give us enough time if the landscape changes for us to be able to provide that medication while we look for more than two- or three-year solutions.”

According to him, the pills are the “standard care” for medical abortions. Kalyanaraman added that they would want to make sure women in the state of Maryland and others have access to “basic health care needs.” The Old Line State is not alone in this endeavor as other pro-abortion states such as California, Massachusetts, Washington and Oregon have done the same.

MDH Secretary Laura Herrera Scott emphasized that mifepristone is “important to reproductive health.” She said: “Losing access to this medication will lead to poor health outcomes for women. The MDH is … proud to protect the reproductive rights of Marylanders, and we will continue to do so.”

A report by WYPR stated that Maryland initially decided to stockpile mifepristone back in April. The decision stemmed from a federal judge in Texas temporarily stopping the use of the drug. The magistrate argued that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) improperly approved mifepristone. (Related: Texas judge imposes nationwide block on abortion drug mifepristone; liberals melt down.)

According to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, mifepristone was originally approved by the FDA in 2000 and is prescribed in more than 60 countries. It is used for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. and accounted for 53 percent of all abortions in 2020, a major increase from 39 percent in 2017.

Mifepristone is one of two drugs used in a chemical abortion regimen. It is taken to block the action of progesterone, a hormone secreted by the mother’s body to nourish the child in the womb. Taking mifepristone causes the lining of the uterus to deteriorate, cutting off blood and nutrients to the developing baby.

The effects of mifepristone causes the death of the baby while in the womb. After this, the second drug misoprostol – sold under the name Cytotec – is then taken. Misoprostol will then cause contractions and bleeding, forcing the expulsion of the now-dead baby from the uterus.
