Holistic nutritionist and organic lifestyle advocate Tammy Cuthbert Garcia shared three strategies people can follow to cause a positive impact on their health.
Garcia shared these strategies in an episode of her program “Naturally Inspired Daily.” She began by saying that many people begin the New Year with a resolution to lose weight and look after their health overall. But thanks to headlines such as “drop 10 pounds in 10 days” or “lose your belly fat,” many are tempted to do shortcuts like fad diets – things Garcia is not a fan of.
Instead, she shared three easy-to-follow strategies people can use to build the foundation that can help change their relationship with food and how they view their health.
First, she advised people to eat for nutritional content.
“Instead of thinking about convenience, price and something that you crave or a guilty pleasure – think about the food in terms of what nutritional content it is going to provide for your body,” Garcia said.
“Once you start really looking in on those things closer, you’ll realize that some of the foods that you eat just aren’t worth it. When you take a close look at that and you make choices based on nutritional content, it will make your choices a lot more valuable to you.”
Second, she urged people to read about where their food comes from every day.
“The knowledge that we acquire about our food changes our action,” Garcia emphasized. “That is really helpful. As you accumulate this knowledge 15 minutes a day, you’ll find that it spreads out with all of your health habits, so it’s really valuable.”
According to the holistic nutritionist, picking up facts about fast food companies not abiding by ethical practices or adding things such as wood chips, plastic polymers or fillers in food items is a turn-off.
Lastly, Garcia advised people to track their food intake.
While she acknowledged that doing so can be cumbersome and tedious for people, they have to realize that what they eat affects their body. Garcia added that when people are aware of their calorie, protein, carbohydrate and fat intake, they would not believe how much of these is in the food they regularly eat.
Taking the right amount of food nutrients to feel a lot more satiated allows a person to have foods that they want within the caloric range, she continued.
Garcia does not believe in eliminating whole food groups in diet, but she said people need to know the food they eat and learn to stay within certain boundaries. She continued that people need to plan and follow the steps she gave in order to get the results they want.
She also pointed out that living a healthy lifestyle is so much more than just losing weight.
“This is only one of the metrics that you can use to track your health. There is so much more involved in living a healthy lifestyle to being able to feel good, to improving your mood, to contributing to a local economy by buying things that are close to you and to being just ethically buying the right products. This all makes an impact on modeling for other children, or even for other adults.”
She went on to say that a person’s health has a huge impact, and measuring it with just one metric isn’t sustainable. A person also needs to build a lifestyle that they believe in and feel good about the actions they do. These actions, Garcia added, should carry a person through to get the weight loss goals they want and maintain them.
